Merdeka and the Morning Star

Civil Resistance in West Papua

An important addition to UQP’s internationally acclaimed Peace & Conflict Studies seriesWest Papua is a secret story. On the western half of the island of New Guinea, hidden from the world, in a place occupied by the Indonesian military since 1963, continues a remarkable nonviolent struggle for national liberation. In Merdeka and the Morning Star, academic Jason MacLeod gives an insider’s view of the trajectory and dynamics of civil resistance in West Papua. Here, the indigenous population has staged protests, boycotts, strikes and other nonviolent actions against repressive rule. This is the first in-depth account of civilian-led insurrection in West Papua, a movement that has transitioned from guerrilla warfare to persistent nonviolent resistance. MacLeod analyses several case studies, including tax resistance that pre-dates Gandhi’s Salt March by two decades, worker strikes at the world’s largest gold and copper mine, daring attempts to escape Indonesian rule by dugout canoe, and the collection of a petition in which signing meant to risk being shot dead.Merdeka and the Morning Star is a must-read for all those interested in Indonesia, the Pacific, self-determination struggles and nonviolent ways out of occupation.

Managing Military Organisations

Theory and Practice

This book deals with the processes and theories involved in managing military organisations in both peacetime and crisis conditions. Examining the challenges faced by policymakers and military commanders in conducting military operations, this book considers the benefits of conventional management and organisation theory for the military. At the same time, these essays recognise that the military should be considered as a highly individual organisation, operating in exceptional circumstances. This awareness of the differences between the military and other organisations generates important lessons not only for the military but also for general organisations as it teaches them how to cope in exceptional, ‘hyper’ conditions. These theoretical lessons are illustrated by case studies and experiences from recent military operations, such as those in Iraq and Afghanistan. This book will be of great interest to students of military studies, security studies and organizational studies. Joseph Soeters chairs the department of management and organization studies and defence economy at the Netherlands Defense Academy and he is a professor in organizational sociology at Tilburg University. Paul. C. van Fenema is an associate professor of organization studies at the Netherlands Defence Academy and Tilburg University. Robert Beeres is an associate professor in the field of defence accounting and control (business administration) at the Netherlands Defence Academy and at Nyenrode Business School.

Human Capital, Inter-firm Mobility and Organizational Evolution

A pioneering and innovative analysis of how the social organization of talent and the mobility of talent shape entrepreneurial activity, the spread of organizational innovations, the incidence of mergers and acquisitions and the demise of organizations. A must read for students of organizations, strategy and human resource management. Hayagreeva Rao, Stanford University, US In this book, Pennings and Wezel address a neglected topic in organizational theory: the links between individual behaviors and organizational outcomes. Their study. . . demonstrates how individual careers affect organizational founding, competitiveness, and survival, and provides rich insights on the role of human capital in professional partnerships. It offers a new perspective backed by solid reasoning and evidence. Henrich R. Greve, Norwegian School of Management, Norway The authors of this fascinating and original work contend that by analysing the conduct of organization members, a great deal can be learnt about firm behaviour and about the cooperative and competitive forces that underlie industry evolution. The empirical chapters in this volume are preceded by a conceptual overview of macro-organizational theories that explicitly bring in the role of individual actions. A rich set of studies carried out in the Dutch accounting sector is used to illustrate that changes in competitive positioning and behaviour are triggered by employee actions including advancement and defection to competitors. New insights on entrepreneurship, mergers and acquisitions and organizational dissolution further develop the multi-level focus of the set of studies presented here. The book aims at stimulating intellectual debate on the role of migration of human and social capital through inter-firm mobility and will provide a fascinating read for academics, researchers, students and practitioners with an interest in organizational theory, strategic management and human resource management.

Many authors, expressing the view that the modern world is becoming a '
knowledge society', have discussed the importance of organization-level human
and social capital for organizational performance and survival (for example,

Sexuality in Islam

Originally published in 1985. Beginning with the Qur’an, Abdelwahab Bouhdiba confronts the question of male supremacy in Islam, and the strict separation of the masculine and the feminine. He gives an account of purification practices, of Islamic attitudes towards homosexuality, concubinage, legal marriage and of the sexual taboos laid down by the Qur’an. He assesses present-day sexual practice, including eroticism, misogyny and mysticism and concludes that the sexual alienation – and even oppression – of modern Muslim women is the result not of the Islamic vision of sexuality, but of social and economic pressures.

Silent River, Empty Night

Diary of a Pediatrician in Iran

There was a full moon and high tide, a sea of glittering little waves strutting towards the Gulf, only to be swallowed by bigger waves. A shaky silver reflection of the moon brightened the dark river, broken every now and then by a man's dark shadow in the middle of a little canoe sliding to an unknown destination, like a sea bird, singing a popular song in the sweet local dialect, "I would ask if I could reach the heavens, why you bless some with all the luxuries and a loaf of bread tainted with blood for others?" And then from as far away as one could see, deep in the dark, beyond all the old tall palm trees touching the clouds, kissing the moon, a muffled voice chanted, hard to hear, fading from-time-to-time, interrupted by the oars gently cutting through the river's warm water and a cool breeze going from cheek to cheek chanted: "Why do you come to my dream every night if you don't love me?" The river was silent, the night empty, the voices heavenly.
