Multivariate Data Analysis in Sensory and Consumer Science

This book is an outgrowth of research done by Dr. Gamt Dijsterhuis for his doctoral thesis at the University of Leiden. However, there are also contributions by several other authors, as well, including Eeke van der Burg, John Gower, Pieter Punter, Els van den Broek, and Margo Flipsen. This book discusses the use of Multivariate Data Analysis to solve problems in sensory and consumer research. More specifically the focus is on the analysis of the reactions to certain characteristics of food products, which are in the form of scores given to attributes perceived in the food stimuli; the analyses are multivariate; and the senses are mainly the senses of smell and taste. The four main themes covered in the book are: (1) Individual Differences, (2) Measurement Levels; (3) Sensory-Instrumental Relations, and (4) Time-Intensity Data Analysis. The statistical methods discussed include Principle Components Analysis, Generalized Procrustes Analysis, Multidimensional Scaling, Redundancy Analysis, and Canonical Analysis. This book will be a value to all professionals and students working in the sensory studies

Methods of Multivariate Analysis

Praise for the Second Edition "This book is a systematic, well-written, well-organized text on multivariate analysis packed with intuition and insight . . . There is much practical wisdom in this book that is hard to find elsewhere." —IIE Transactions Filled with new and timely content, Methods of Multivariate Analysis, Third Edition provides examples and exercises based on more than sixty real data sets from a wide variety of scientific fields. It takes a "methods" approach to the subject, placing an emphasis on how students and practitioners can employ multivariate analysis in real-life situations. This Third Edition continues to explore the key descriptive and inferential procedures that result from multivariate analysis. Following a brief overview of the topic, the book goes on to review the fundamentals of matrix algebra, sampling from multivariate populations, and the extension of common univariate statistical procedures (including t-tests, analysis of variance, and multiple regression) to analogous multivariate techniques that involve several dependent variables. The latter half of the book describes statistical tools that are uniquely multivariate in nature, including procedures for discriminating among groups, characterizing low-dimensional latent structure in high-dimensional data, identifying clusters in data, and graphically illustrating relationships in low-dimensional space. In addition, the authors explore a wealth of newly added topics, including: Confirmatory Factor Analysis Classification Trees Dynamic Graphics Transformations to Normality Prediction for Multivariate Multiple Regression Kronecker Products and Vec Notation New exercises have been added throughout the book, allowing readers to test their comprehension of the presented material. Detailed appendices provide partial solutions as well as supplemental tables, and an accompanying FTP site features the book's data sets and related SAS® code. Requiring only a basic background in statistics, Methods of Multivariate Analysis, Third Edition is an excellent book for courses on multivariate analysis and applied statistics at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. The book also serves as a valuable reference for both statisticians and researchers across a wide variety of disciplines.

Student Affairs Budgeting and Financial Management in the Midst of Fiscal Crisis

New Directions for Student Services, Number 129

This volume is designed to help senior student affairs officersnavigate through uncertain economic times. After a broad review ofbudget models and the leadership potential of the senior officer,we look at the role of student affairs officers in difficultbudgeting decisions from several perspectives--from small, privatecolleges to the experiences of twelve senior student affairsofficers at public universities. One chapter describes generalrevenue-generating and cost-saving strategies that student affairsdivisions may consider during cutbacks; another focuses on keyaspects of developing a comprehensive communication strategy: athird presents a case study of a single institution through theeyes of the vice president for student affairs. This volume endswith a summary survey of the authors' observations, conclusions, and advice. This is the 129th volume of the Jossey-Bass higher educationquarterly report series New Directions for StudentServices. Analysing Survival Data from Clinical Trials and Observational Studies

A practical guide to methods of survival analysis for medical researchers with limited statistical experience. Methods and techniques described range from descriptive and exploratory analysis to multivariate regression methods. Uses illustrative data from actual clinical trials and observational studies to describe methods of analysing and reporting results. Also reviews the features and performance of statistical software available for applying the methods of analysis discussed.

However, seriously biased estimates may be obtained if calculations are done
without carefully considering the definition of (1) time of entry into the study (entry
point); (2) events of interest (end-point); and (3) modalities of follow-up For the ...

The Internet of Things

More objects and devices are connected to digital networks than ever before. Things - from your phone to your car, from the heating to the lights in your house - have gathered the ability to sense their environments and create information about what is happening. Things have become media, able to both generate and communicate information. This has become known as 'the internet of things'. In this accessible introduction, Graham Meikle and Mercedes Bunz observe its promises of convenience and the breaking of new frontiers in communication. They also raise urgent questions regarding ubiquitous surveillance and information security, as well as the transformation of intimate personal information into commercial data. Discussing the internet of things from a media and communication perspective, this book is an important resource for courses analysing the internet and society, and essential reading for anyone who wants to better understand the rapidly changing roles of our networked lives.
