Arthropods of Tropical Forests

Spatio-Temporal Dynamics and Resource Use in the Canopy

Arthropods are the most diverse group of organisms on our planet and the tropical rainforests represent the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems. This book, written by 79 authors contributing to 35 chapters, aims to provide an overview of data collected during recent studies in Australia, Africa, Asia, and South America. The book focuses on the distribution of arthropods and their use of resources in the rainforest canopies, providing a basis for comparison between the forest ecosystems of the main biogeographical regions. Topics covered include the distribution of arthropods along vertical gradients and the relationship between the soil/litter habitat and the forest canopy. The temporal dynamics of arthropod communities, habitats and food selection are examined within and among tropical tree crowns, as are the effects of forest disturbance. This important book is a valuable addition to the literature used by community ecologists, conservation biologists entomologists, botanists and forestry experts.

ABSTRACT Insect herbivory, species richness and distribution in the canopy of
tropical savanna is compared with that of tropical rainforests by compiling
published information from various savanna and forest habitats in the neotropics,
Africa and Australasia. An overview of herbivory patterns is presented,
contrasting species- rich plant assemblages with natural monodominant tree
populations. Data suggest that host trees suffer greater herbivory in savannas
than in rainforests and in ...

The Invaders Plan

Mission Earth

Earth does not exist. . . . Or so they want you to believe. Who are they? What do they want? And who do they think they are? They are the Voltarians of Voltar—an empire 110 planets strong. They are already among us. And the invasion is about to begin . . . in a hundred years or so. Or is it? The truth is far more sinister. Undercover, underground and out of sight, the invaders plan what may in fact be a massive diversion. In the darkest recesses of Voltar’s Coordinated Information Apparatus (otherwise known as the CIA), a tyrant of terror sets out to exploit the invasion in order to seize power. All that stands in his way is a planet that doesn’t exist. Discover a world where corporations rule and political corruption is rife. Where governments are driven by oil and controlled by drugs. Where global warming is getting hotter by the minute . . . and a scorching love affair could determine the fate of millions. Where a cosmic conspiracy is about to hit home and the intergalactic intrigue knows no bounds. They call it Blito-P3. We call it Earth. You can’t afford to look the other way. It’s the end of the world as you know it . . . and the beginning of one of the most spectacular, thought-provoking, and wildly inventive works of science fiction and espionage of our time. “You will lose sleep. You will miss appointments. If you don’t force yourself to set it down and talk to your family from time to time, you may be looking for a new place to live. Reading The Invaders Plan is simply the most fun you can have by yourself.” —ORSON SCOTT CARD

Blito-P3 colonization was deemed illegal at that time and in violation of the Holy
Invasion Timetables of Voltar. At the insistence of the woman Nepogat the
freighter crews were put to death. The turmoil of the times foreswore any further
campaign to punish Prince Caucalsia, the Fortress City of Dar was burned in the
Great Overthrow of the succeeding year and all records that could substantiate
the legend have vanished from view. This folk legend forms the background of
the child fairy ...

Researching Tropical Rainforests

Complete primary IIM units on Rainforests

(Date) Dear Parents, The students in my class are excited to start their study of
the tropical rainforest. This study will involve work in reading, language, math,
science, social studies, and the arts using a rainforest theme as its focus. They
will also be learning an innovative research process called The Independent
Investigation Method (abbreviated as “IIM” and often said as “Double-I-M”). This

Fortune of Fear:

Mission Earth Volume 5 (Reissue)

The Voltarian invaders are getting down and dirty ... in the deadliest of games. The price: Planet Earth. Voltarian Royal Officer Jettero Heller has heart, nerve and a quick mind on his side. His archenemy Soltan Gris has cunning, ruthlessness and a devious plan on his. But what neither of them has is money—and without that they may as well pack up and go back to Voltar. Because as every earthling knows—no pay, no play. Heller’s solution is a weekend in Atlantic City, where he puts a new spin on gambling. He's got a foolproof system, guaranteeing that he’ll win every bet he makes. Gris, on the other hand, has found an unexpected source of income. His body. Turns out there are certain women, with a very perverse sense of humor, willing to pay to play with him. Into this world of dirty money, dirty tricks and dirty games, the wildest of wild cards is about to change everything. Countess Krak is back—and this voluptuous Voltarian, condemned murderess and love of Heller’s life could prove to be the key player in coming to grips with a Fortune of Fear. “The adventure, colored by broad strokes of satire, is written with a vigor.” —Publishers Weekly This book is intended for mature audiences.

Handbook of Video Databases

Design and Applications

Technology has spurred the growth of huge image and video libraries, many growing into the hundreds of terabytes. As a result there is a great demand among organizations for the design of databases that can effectively support the storage, search, retrieval, and transmission of video data. Engineers and researchers in the field demand a comprehensive reference that will help them design and implement the most complex video database projects. Handbook of Video Databases: Design and Applications presents a thorough overview in 45 chapters from more than 100 renowned experts in the field. This book provides the tools to help overcome the problems of storage, cataloging, and retrieval, by exploring content standardization and other content classification and analysis methods. The challenge of these complex problems make this book a must-have for video database practitioners in the fields of image and video processing, computer vision, multimedia systems, data mining, and many other diverse disciplines.

INTRODUCTION At a minimum, a multimedia database must contain the media
itself, plus some level of metadata which describes the media. In early systems,
this metadata was limited to simple fields containing basic attributes such as the
media title, author, etc. and the user would select media using relational queries
on the fields. Video on demand systems are one example of this. More recently,
systems have been developed to analyze the content of the media to create rich ...
