Database Management Systems

Understanding and Applying Database Technology

Database Management Systems: Understanding and Applying Database Technology focuses on the processes, methodologies, techniques, and approaches involved in database management systems (DBMSs). The book first takes a look at ANSI database standards and DBMS applications and components. Discussion focus on application components and DBMS components, implementing the dynamic relationship application, problems and benefits of dynamic relationship DBMSs, nature of a dynamic relationship application, ANSI/NDL, and DBMS standards. The manuscript then ponders on logical database, interrogation, and physical database. Topics include choosing the right interrogation language, procedure-oriented language, system control capabilities, DBMSs and language orientation, logical database components, and data definition language. The publication examines system control, including system control components, audit trails, reorganization, concurrent operations, multiple database processing, security and privacy, system control static and dynamic differences, and installation and maintenance. The text is a valuable source of information for computer engineers and researchers interested in exploring the applications of database technology.

Investigative Data Mining for Security and Criminal Detection

Investigative Data Mining for Security and Criminal Detection is the first book to outline how data mining technologies can be used to combat crime in the 21st century. It introduces security managers, law enforcement investigators, counter-intelligence agents, fraud specialists, and information security analysts to the latest data mining techniques and shows how they can be used as investigative tools. Readers will learn how to search public and private databases and networks to flag potential security threats and root out criminal activities even before they occur. The groundbreaking book reviews the latest data mining technologies including intelligent agents, link analysis, text mining, decision trees, self-organizing maps, machine learning, and neural networks. Using clear, understandable language, it explains the application of these technologies in such areas as computer and network security, fraud prevention, law enforcement, and national defense. International case studies throughout the book further illustrate how these technologies can be used to aid in crime prevention. Investigative Data Mining for Security and Criminal Detection will also serve as an indispensable resource for software developers and vendors as they design new products for the law enforcement and intelligence communities. Key Features: * Covers cutting-edge data mining technologies available to use in evidence gathering and collection * Includes numerous case studies, diagrams, and screen captures to illustrate real-world applications of data mining * Easy-to-read format illustrates current and future data mining uses in preventative law enforcement, criminal profiling, counter-terrorist initiatives, and forensic science * Introduces cutting-edge technologies in evidence gathering and collection, using clear non-technical language * Illustrates current and future applications of data mining tools in preventative law enforcement, homeland security, and other areas of crime detection and prevention * Shows how to construct predictive models for detecting criminal activity and for behavioral profiling of perpetrators * Features numerous Web links, vendor resources, case studies, and screen captures illustrating the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies

Handbook of Water and Wastewater Treatment Technologies

This Handbook is an authoritative reference for process and plant engineers, water treatment plant operators and environmental consultants. Practical information is provided for application to the treatment of drinking water and to industrial and municipal wastewater. The author presents material for those concerned with meeting government regulations, reducing or avoiding fines for violations, and making cost-effective decisions while producing a high quality of water via physical, chemical, and thermal techniques. Included in the texts are sidebar discussions, questions for thinking and discussing, recommended resources for the reader, and a comprehensive glossary. Two companion books by Cheremisinoff are available: Handbook of Air Pollution Control Technologies, and Handbook of Solid Waste Management and Waste Minimization Technologies. * Covers the treatment of drinking water as well as industrial and municipal wastewater * Cost-efficiency considerations are incorporated in the discussion of methodologies * Provides practical and broad-based information in one comprehensive source

This Handbook is an authoritative reference for process and plant engineers, water treatment plant operators and environmental consultants.

Applying UML

Advanced Applications

Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a general-purpose notation language for specifying and visualizing complex software, especially large, object-oriented projects. Object-oriented programming is when a programmer defines not only the data type of a data structure, but also the types of operations/functions that can be applied to the data structure. Applying UML addresses the practical issues faced by users in adopting UML. As the title suggests, it helps the reader in actually applying UML to real life situations, rather than just in learning the language. The book covers in depth detail of UML, including notation on profiles and extensions. The scope of the book assumes prior experience in software engineering and/or business modeling, an understanding of object-oriented concepts and a basic knowledge of UML. * Case study driven approach covering a wide range of issues * Contains advanced tutorial material to aid learning * Focuses on practical issues in the application of UML

Strength of Materials

A Unified Theory

Strength of Materials provides a comprehensive overview of the latest theory of strength of materials. The unified theory presented in this book is developed around three concepts: Hooke's Law, Equilibrium Equations, and Compatibility conditions. The first two of these methods have been fully understood, but clearly are indirect methods with limitations. Through research, the authors have come to understand compatibility conditions, which, until now, had remained in an immature state of development. This method, the Integrated Force Method (IFM) couples equilibrium and compatibility conditions to determine forces directly. The combination of these methods allows engineering students from a variety of disciplines to comprehend and compare the attributes of each. The concept that IFM strength of materials theory is problem independent, and can be easily generalized for solving difficult problems in linear, nonlinear, and dynamic regimes is focused upon. Discussion of the theory is limited to simple linear analysis problems suitable for an undergraduate course in strength of materials. To support the teaching application of the book there are problems and an instructor's manual. Provides a novel approach integrating two popular indirect solution methods with newly researched, more direct conditions Completes the previously partial theory of strength of materials A new frontier in solid mechanics

The unified theory presented in this book is developed around three concepts: Hooke's Law, Equilibrium Equations, and Compatibility conditions.
