Fundamentals of Database Management Systems

Gillenson's new edition of Fundamentals of Database Management Systems provides concise coverage of the fundamental topics necessary for a deep understanding of the basics. In this issue, there is more emphasis on a practical approach, with new "your turn" boxes and much more coverage in a separate supplement on how to implement databases with Access. In every chapter, the author covers concepts first, then show how they're implemented in continuing case(s.) "Your Turn" boxes appear several times throughout the chapter to apply concepts to projects. And "Concepts in Action" boxes contain examples of concepts used in practice. This pedagogy is easily demonstrable and the text also includes more hands-on exercises and projects and a standard diagramming style for the data modeling diagrams. Furthermore, revised and updated content and organization includes more coverage on database control issues, earlier coverage of SQL, and new coverage on data quality issues.

Database Management Systems

The book is intended to provide an insight into the DBMS concepts. An effort has been made to familiarize the readers with the concepts of database normalization, concurrency control, deadlock handling and recovery etc., which are extremely vital for a clear understanding of DBMS. To familiarize the readers with the equivalence amongst Relational Algebra, Tuple Relational Calculus, and SQL, a large number of equivalent queries have been provided. The concepts of normalization have been elaborated very systematically by fully covering the underlying concepts of functional dependencies, multi-valued dependencies, join dependencies, loss-less-join decomposition, dependency-preserving decomposition etc. It is hoped that with the help of the information provided in the text, a reader will be able to design a flawless database. Also, the concepts of serializabilty, concurrency control, deadlock handling and log-based recovery have been covered in full detail. An overview has also been provided of the issues related to distributed-databases.

Cloud Computing

Principles, Systems and Applications

This practically-focused reference presents a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in Cloud Computing, and examines the potential for future Cloud and Cloud-related technologies to address specific industrial and research challenges. This new edition explores both established and emergent principles, techniques, protocols and algorithms involved with the design, development, and management of Cloud-based systems. The text reviews a range of applications and methods for linking Clouds, undertaking data management and scientific data analysis, and addressing requirements both of data analysis and of management of large scale and complex systems. This new edition also extends into the emergent next generation of mobile telecommunications, relating network function virtualization and mobile edge Cloud Computing, as supports Smart Grids and Smart Cities. As with the first edition, emphasis is placed on the four quality-of-service cornerstones of efficiency, scalability, robustness, and security.

The Egyptian Oracle Project

Ancient Ceremony in Augmented Reality

For more than 2,000 years, between 1500 BCE and 600 CE, the Egyptian processional oracle was one of the main points of contact between temple-based religion and the general population. In a public ceremony, a god would indicate its will or answer questions through the movements of a portable cult statue borne by priests or important members of the community. The Egyptian Oracle Project is an interactive performance that adapts this ceremony to serve as the basis for a mixed-reality educational experience for children and young adults, using both virtual reality and live performance. The scene is set in a virtual Egyptian temple projected onto a wall. An oracle led by a high priest avatar (controlled by a live human puppeteer) is brought into the presence of a live audience, who act in the role of the Egyptian populace. Through the mediation of an actress, the audience interacts with the avatar, recreating the event. The series of carefully focused essays in this book provides vital background to this path-breaking project in three sections. After a brief introduction to educational theatre and virtual reality, the first section describes the ancient ceremony and its development, along with cross-cultural connections. Then the development of the script and its performance in the context of mixed-reality and educational theatre are examined. The final set of essays describes the virtual temple setting in more detail and explores the wider implications of this project for virtual heritage.
