Coupled Electromagnetic Field/Circuit Simulation. Modeling and Numerical Analysis

Today's most commonly used circuit models increasingly tend to lose their validity in circuit simulation due to rapid technological developments, miniaturization and increased complexity of integrated circuits. The starting point of this thesis was to tackle these challenges by refining the critical parts of the circuit by combining circuit simulation directly with distributed device models. The approach set out in this thesis couples partial differential equations for electromagnetic devices - modeled by Maxwell's equations -, to differential-algebraic equations, which describe basic circuit elements including memristors and the circuit's topology. First, Maxwell's equations are spatially discretized and a potential formulation is derived, the coupled system is then formulated as a differential-algebraic equation with a properly stated leading term and analyzed. Topological and modeling conditions are presented to guarantee the tractability index of these differential-algebraic equations to be no greater than two. Finally, local solvability, perturbation results and an algorithm to calculate consistent initializations are derived for a general class of differential-algebraic equations with a properly stated leading term having tractability index-2.

These results extend the topological index conditions for the modified nodal
analysis given in . Our index analysis for coupled electromagnetic device/ circuit
models is not restricted to certain conductor models and we do not suppose that

Simulation Modeling and Arena

Traditionally, there have been two primary types of simulation textbooks: those that emphasize the theoretical (and mostly statistical) aspects of simulation, and those that emphasize the simulation language or package.Simulation Modeling and Arena, Second Edition blends these two aspects of simulation textbooks together while adding and emphasizing the art of model building. This book features coverage of statistical analysis, which is integrated with the modeling to emphasize the importance of both topics. The Second Edition features new topical coverage, including static simulation and spreadsheet simulation; how simulation works and why it matters; and expanded use of Arena, specifically the use of strings in models, the Atribute module, the OnChange block, visual dashboards, and an introduction to 3-D animation concepts. In addition, a running example is presented throghout each chapter to prepare readers to perform a realistic case study based on the IIE/RA contest problem. The new edition also contains expanded topical coverage on: simulation clock within discrete event modeling simulation; statistical modeling concepts with the theoretical basis and equationsneeded to perform the analysis by hand; increased use of Arena Run Controller, modeling non-stationary arrival processes; and the Wait-Signal constructs.

This book features coverage of statistical analysis, which is integrated with the modeling to emphasize the importance of both topics.

Multiscale Modeling and Analysis for Materials Simulation

The Institute for Mathematical Sciences at the National University of Singapore hosted a two-month research program on OC Mathematical Theory and Numerical Methods for Computational Materials Simulation and DesignOCO from 1 July to 31 August 2009. As an important part of the program, tutorials and special lectures were given by leading experts in the fields for participating graduate students and junior researchers. This invaluable volume collects four expanded lecture notes with self-contained tutorials. They cover a number of aspects on multiscale modeling, analysis and simulations for problems arising from materials science including some critical components in computational prediction of materials properties such as the multiscale properties of complex materials, properties of defects, interfaces and material microstructures under different conditions, critical issues in developing efficient numerical methods and analytic frameworks for complex and multiscale materials models. This volume serves to inspire graduate students and researchers who choose to embark into original research work in these fields.

Discrete Event Simulation (DES) Modeling and Analysis for Strategic Program Planning and Management

OptQuest and Arena software provided the platform for the simulation modeling effort. Arena software proved to be very flexible and eliminated some of the constraints exhibited by traditional program management constructs such as PERT or CPM. Furthermore, the combined functionality of these software packages provided a powerful optimization modeling tool and is demonstrated in the three illustrative examples contained in this document.

Recommended Minimum Number of Simulations The number of replications

Seismic Modeling and Analysis of a Four Story Steel Moment Frame Building and Comparison of Methods of Its Simulation Using SAP-2000

Blind Prediction Contest, 2007, was announced by the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention, Japan. The goal was to improve the seismic performance of steel frames using numerical simulation. A full scale four story steel moment frame building was designed, constructed and tested to collapse on the largest three-dimensional shake table in Japan. A detailed numerical simulation of the building has been performed in this thesis to compare with the experimental data. The comparison indicated a fairly close prediction of most of the kinetic and kinematic parameters. The effect of damping parameters on numerical simulation methods are studied in this work. The thesis presents all the details of the simulations for the contest and some of the viscous damping studies made after the post test submission. This thesis also presents a comparative study of three different methods of simulation along with viscous damping parameter study.

Using a GIS for Simulation, Modeling, and Analysis of Bobcat (Lynx Rufus) Habitat Utilization on Kiawah Island, South Carolina

Bobcats (Lynx rufus) are medium sized predators common throughout the continental US. Like many mammalian predators, bobcats have been subject to habitat fragmentation induced by human development. While the effects of fragmentation on bobcat behavior have been studied, few studies have focused on bobcats living within a suburban zone. Kiawah Island is a residential/resort barrier island in the lowcountry of South Carolina that is home to a healthy population of bobcats. In March of 2007, 5 bobcats (3 males, 2 females) were fitted with GPS collars. The bobcat's GPS locations were overlaid with land cover information, and a chi-square statistic was used to determine if particular habitats were selected over others during day and night time periods. Forested and scrub/shrub areas were always selected, and marsh areas were always avoided. Developed zones were avoided during the day, but selected at night. The habitat selection data was used to create a simulated dataset for the entire island, and a kernel density was applied to illustrate probability of occurrence. Bobcats were predicted most likely to occur in the eastern end of the island, and in the scrub/shrub areas behind a primary dune ridge. An additional additive model was applied to identify vacant parcels most conducive to conservation of bobcat habitat based on the size and distance of the parcel to preferential habitats. The ranked parcels were overlaid with the percent cover or preferential habitat to identify the parcels that could provide the most benefit for conservation.

Simulation Modeling Handbook

A Practical Approach

The use of simulation modeling and analysis is becoming increasingly more popular as a technique for improving or investigating process performance. This book is a practical, easy-to-follow reference that offers up-to-date information and step-by-step procedures for conducting simulation studies. It provides sample simulation project support material, including checklists, data-collection forms, and sample simulation project reports and publications to facilitate practitioners' efforts in conducting simulation modeling and analysis projects. Simulation Modeling Handbook: A Practical Approach has two major advantages over other treatments. First, it is independent of any particular simulation software, allowing readers to use any commercial package or programming language. Second, it was written to insulate practitioners from unnecessary simulation theory that does not focus on their average, practical needs. As the popularity of simulation studies continues to grow, the planning and execution of these projects, more and more engineering and management professionals will be called upon to perform these tasks. With its simple, no-nonsense approach and focus on application rather than theory, this comprehensive and easy-to-understand guide is the ideal vehicle for acquiring the background and skills needed to undertake effective simulation projects. Features Presents step-by-step procedures for conducting successful simulation modeling and analysis Addresses every phase of performing simulations, from formulating the problem to presenting study results and recommendations Uses approaches applicable regardless of the specific simulation or software used Includes a summary of the major simulation software packages and discusses the pros and cons of using general purpose programming languages
