Analyzing Computer System Performance with Perl::PDQ

To solve performance problems in modern computing infrastructures, often comprising thousands of servers running hundreds of applications, spanning multiple tiers, you need tools that go beyond mere reporting. You need tools that enable performance analysis of application workflow across the entire enterprise. That's what PDQ (Pretty Damn Quick) provides. PDQ is an open-source performance analyzer based on the paradigm of queues. Queues are ubiquitous in every computing environment as buffers, and since any application architecture can be represented as a circuit of queueing delays, PDQ is a natural fit for analyzing system performance. Building on the success of the first edition, this considerably expanded second edition now comprises four parts. Part I contains the foundational concepts, as well as a new first chapter that explains the central role of queues in successful performance analysis. Part II provides the basics of queueing theory in a highly intelligible style for the non-mathematician; little more than high-school algebra being required. Part III presents many practical examples of how PDQ can be applied. The PDQ manual has been relegated to an appendix in Part IV, along with solutions to the exercises contained in each chapter. Throughout, the Perl code listings have been newly formatted to improve readability. The PDQ code and updates to the PDQ manual are available from the author's web site at www.perfdynamics.com

IPv6 Mandates

Choosing a Transition Strategy, Preparing Transition Plans, and Executing the Migration of a Network to IPv6

Here's the guide you need for a smooth transition to IPv6 Ready or not, IPv6 is coming. While every enterprise will have some individual issues to manage, this guide will help you decide on a transition strategy, develop a plan, execute it, and verify progress. You'll understand the common tasks and recognize the risks and limitations of IPv6. Follow the guidelines, use the checklists, and you will find that making the transition is no longer intimidating; in fact, it may even require fewer resources than you anticipate. Handle your transition as you would any large-scale technology rollout Know at every stage whether you're on track, and how to fix things if you're not Understand the Federal mandates that are driving IPv6 adoption Craft plans that take into account the unique elements and pitfalls related to IPv6 Discover IPv6-specific issues, such as rules regarding the use and allocation of IPv6 addresses Establish groups of tasks, identify and resolve dependencies among them, and assign an optimal order for execution Maintain your newly IPv6-capable network to keep it operational and secure

Strategic Management

A Dynamic Perspective : Concepts and Cases

This is the book that enables students to transfer conceptual classroom learning to strategic application in their professional lives. The new Australian edition of Strategic Management is the only text on the market that integrates the Dynamic Perspective of Strategic Management across all topics. It emphasises this throughout the text by incorporating 3 main themes: changing strategies for changing times, the integration of formulation and implementation and strategic leadership. The use of the Strategic Diamond model is also prominent through the text. The model effectively details five key strategic elements necessary for creating a complete strategy: arenas, vehicles, differentiators, staging, and economic logic. The Strategic Diamond gives students a solid model for considering all aspects of a strategy in order to create and implement a complete strategy. The arenas and staging elements deal specifically with the dynamic aspect of strategy. There are two How Would You Do That? exercises in each chapter, exposing students to the implementation challenges that companies face every day. These exercises ensure that implementation remains in the forefront of the students minds as they work through the text. With this interactive feature, students have a chance to place themselves into the role of a strategic decision maker at a well-known (and interesting) company. Using Excel, each How would you Do That clearly shows students the interdependence of formulation and implementation and lets them practice their decision making skills.
